Pros: thick, creaming chocolate coating
Cons: too much sugar, too much saturated fat (sounds like a summary of American diet!)
The Bottom Line: In moderation...

| Stephen_Murray's Full Review: Haagen - Dazs Vanilla & Almonds with Milk Chocolat... |
I feel that during the summer (which despite living in San Francisco, I still conceive of as ending rather than beginning with Labor Day) I am entitled to indulge in chocolate-coated ice-cream novelties. Given the few choices Costo provides, I alternate between Skinny Cow ice-cream sandwiches and Haagen-Dazs ice cream bars dipped in almond-infested milk chocolate. I like both and can feel less guilty about the Skinny Cow ones, but revel in H-D decadence. (Breaking from my chocaholic self, I like H-D rum raisin ice cream, too.)
I like the almonds and the vanilla ice cream inside, but the rich milk chocolate is what inspires loyalty from me. I imagine that most of the 20 grams of sugar perserving (87-gram bars, not counting the wooden handles, which I hope are not sugared!) are in the chocolate coating. There are another two grams of carbohydrates that are not sugar.
The 65mg of cholestorol comes from the cream -- though the vanilla ice cream blends cream and skim milk, egg yolks, natural vanilla, and (whoops!) sugar. The dairy input also accounts for some protein: 5 grams per bar.
Saturated fat is also distressingly high: 13 of the 22 grams of total fat. The almonds are roasted (why not baked?) in almond, safflower, and coconut oil.
"Nutrition Facts" -- especially on junk food ("snack food" sounds better for one) -- are depressing reading, either on the box or in reviews, but as more and more of us waddle from being overweight into being obese, we may at least think about the downside of pleasures. Doing so does not stop me, but may decrease consumption to some imagined "moderation."
The texture and taste of the frozen chocolate are pure pleasure for me, even if I have to be careful about chunks falling off (depriving me of part of my chocolate fix, never mind making a mess on my shirtfront or some other surface!).
P.S. At Costco, I buy boxes with 24 bars not 3. Eight times as good? Well, less frequently in need of replenishment anyway.
