"Anatasia" is a fabulous story based on the life of a real woman who claimed to be the daughter of Czar Nicholas. The story reveals the story of this woman named Anna. She suffers from amnesia and convincingly portrays a woman who thinks she may be Anastasia, the daughter of Czar Nicholas, who may have escaped death during the Russian Revolution. The film presents just enough convincing evidence and information to make one believe that it might be true and at the same time leaves just enough doubt to make one wonder if it is a hoax.
This is a splendid spectacle in the true Hollywood big movie tradition. Costumes, music, and the grand presentation of this film present a feast for the eyes. Combine with that spectacular performances by Yul Brynner and Ingrid Bergman, and one has a film that is entertaining and captivating. Ingrid Bergman won her second Academy Award as Best Actress for her performance in this film. Helen Hayes portrays the Grand Duchess and only living close relative to the Czar's family. Though she seems to be convinced that Anastasia is her granddaughter, one still wonders if she really believes or just wants to believe that Anatasia could have survived.
This is a truly wonderful film and beautiful to see. A wonderful story is great but presentation also counts for something. This film is a beautiful creation and a spectacle for the senses. The story of the Russian Revolution, Rasputin, The Czar and Czarina, and the horrible execution of Nicholas' family, and this story of the possible escape by Anastasia is one of history's great tales. This film does this great story a regal treatment and justly tells this fabulous tale of intrigue, suspense, romance, and life. This is a wonderful film and one that the entire family can enjoy. Great is just not strong enough!
