Pros: A Beautiful Camp with great counselors, food, and animals. Cons: Toilets and you eat the animals you took care of last year.
I went to Plantation camp in 2002 after being persuaded by friends. I finally went because it was the last year that I could go as a camper. If I had seen a brochure for this camp I probably would not have gone. I do not want to clean up after animals...
Pros: Morning Singing, Barn dancing and the awesome people and life long friendships made. Cons: I love a good sleep in so 8 is a bit early
I loved Plantation it was the most amazing experience of my life. I was a counsellor for the summer and coming from Australia I thought the transition would be hard, however the people were so friendly and welcoming. Plantation is located about two ...
Pros: Outdoor living on a real farm. Supportive staff. Middle of nowhere. Cons: Middle of nowhere.
My daughter Susan became a counselor at Plantation in 1990 at age 19, after 14 years attending and working at a day camp. Plantation became her passion for its supportive ethic of cooperation and self-reliance, as well as the opportunity to live and...
My daughter sure likes it by boeing377 ,Jul 20 '05
Pros: Good food, great location, great staff. Most campers come back next year. Cons: Expensive tuition, plus laundry fees etc. Bus trip overpriced too.
My daughter (now 12) is back for her third session. She loves it. She tells me that when she has a daughter, she too will be going to this camp. Sounds like a good mix of work and play. Its pretty expensive (as middle class camps go) but if you can afford it, a memorable summer experience like this for your kid is worth it. Be sure you send sun screen up with your camper and try to get them to use it religiously. My girl always gets sunburned a bit, despite all that. For those kids who like horses, there is good riding available along with all the traditional camp activities. Food is good according to my daughter and counselors are "nice". They had a really good rock band show up for a private show last year, they were friends of one of the counselors. I still play the CD my daughter brought home, its really that good. The barn dances are a big hit with the kids and help them develop social skills. Not 100% white and middle/upper class. They try to get a diverse group of kids up there.
Pros: lots of animals, barn dances, family-like atmosphere, etc Cons: the toilettes (called blue boxes) are much like a more sanitary porta potty
I've been a camper at Plantation for four years, I started when i was in fifth grade and though i remember being nervous before going, I immediately made lots of friends and was welcomed by all the staff and Dave and Suzanne Brown who own the farm and used to run the camp. I was so disappointed this year when i knew i couldn't be a camper anymore, but I'm overjoyed that they offer a CILT (camper in leadership training) program and I plan to be a counselor as soon as possible.
It is impossible for kids to become homesick at this camp, they do so much during the day, and by the early bedtimes they're so worn out from the day that there's no time to think about home. Every weekend kids are required to write home to their family. there's a visitors day halfway through the session, and even when a child's parents aren't able to come, they're still involved in activities and taken in by the counselors or can stay with a friend and his/her family.
I highly recommend this camp if you like animals and fun.
Pros: home away from home Cons: 3 weeks is to short
I have been both a camper and counselor...Plantation changed my life. This is an opportunity for you to become part of something bigger. Plantation is not only a camp but an extended family that you learn and grow with summer after summer. It is a place where you can make mistakes and try something new. I cant say enough about it...thanks
